Although Bratton’s main Remembrance Parade takes place on Sunday, the Armistice Day Act of Remembrance was well attended by members of the Bratton Branch of the Royal British Legion, serving members of the Armed Forces and other Bratton residents
The War Memorial looked splendid, having been cleaned over the summer so that inscriptions are now clearly visible. It was delightfully decorated by knitted poppies prepared by Bratton Women’s Institute along the surrounding chain
fence and, an innovation this year, around the Spanish Chestnut tree beside the memorial.
The Act of Remembrance was led by the Chairman of the Bratton Branch of the Royal British Legion, Col Mike O’Donoghue, CBE and Rev Malcolm Wieck.
The start of the two minute silence was marked by the sounding of a WW2 air-raid siren by Ray Davis followed by the playing of the ‘Last Post’ by Faye Coussens.
This was followed by the laying of the wreath by Lieutenant General L P Lillywhite CB MBE.
Proceedings were concluded with one of Bratton Primary School’s ‘Little Troopers’, Elizabeth McDermott reciting the Kohima Epitaph.
